Start with
your medical benefits.

Oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea is generally handled through medical insurance, rather than routine dental benefits. Your diagnosis, plan rules, and treatment details affect coverage.

Working with an insurer does not mean every plan is in network or every service is covered. Your insurer makes the final benefits and payment determination.

Different names.
Know the device.

A mandibular advancement device is an oral appliance that holds the lower jaw forward during sleep to help keep the airway open. For obstructive sleep apnea, a prescribed custom appliance is fitted and adjusted as part of your treatment.

People may call it a sleep apnea mouthpiece or a custom sleep apnea mouth guard. Those everyday terms do not tell you whether a particular product is intended for OSA, requires a prescription, or qualifies under your insurance plan.

A retail snoring guard or a nightguard for grinding and clenching serves a different purpose. Do not assume it is a substitute for prescribed sleep-apnea treatment.

Network and benefits

Network status depends on your exact plan, not just the insurer’s name. Contact us with your plan details so we can confirm participation and benefits.

Requirements

Your diagnosis, plan rules, and treatment details affect coverage.

Ask about network status, coverage requirements, deductibles, and coinsurance. Have your medical insurance information available.

Expected costs

The estimate depends on the appliance and care recommended for you, plus your deductible, coinsurance, and other plan requirements. Ask whether it includes the examination, fitting, adjustments, and follow-up, and which services may be billed separately.

BCBS coverage.
Your questions.

Does BCBS cover a mandibular advancement device for sleep apnea?

Coverage may be available when your plan’s requirements are met. Blue Cross NC’s commercial medical policy includes removable oral appliances for certain patients with diagnosed OSA and requires supporting documentation, including a physician’s prescription and custom fitting by qualified dental personnel. The full criteria and your specific benefit plan determine eligibility.

This policy does not establish coverage for every BCBS plan or confirm that RespAir is in network. Ask our team to review your exact plan before treatment.

Is a sleep apnea mouth guard the same as an oral appliance?

“Sleep apnea mouth guard” and “sleep apnea mouthpiece” are common descriptions, but products differ. A prescribed mandibular advancement device used for OSA is distinct from a retail snoring guard or a nightguard used for teeth grinding. Confirm the device, its intended treatment, and the plan requirements with your care team.

Does insurance cover a dental snore guard?

Do not assume it does. Blue Cross NC’s commercial sleep-apnea policy excludes over-the-counter bite guards and considers treatment of snoring without significant OSA not medically necessary. Prescribed treatment for diagnosed OSA is evaluated under different criteria. Other plans may differ; verify your own benefits.

What should I check about my plan and patient costs?

Ask about network participation, diagnostic records and prescription requirements, any prior authorization, covered services, deductible, coinsurance, and your estimated responsibility. Ask whether the estimate includes the examination, appliance, fitting, adjustments, and follow-up. Benefits verification and an estimate are not guarantees of payment.

Care comes first.

Oral appliance treatment for obstructive sleep apnea requires a physician’s diagnosis and prescription, followed by a dental evaluation. Do not stop prescribed therapy without speaking with your medical provider.

We explain possible next steps, follow-up, and costs before you decide. You’ll have time to ask questions before deciding about treatment.
