What Does It Mean If You Don’t Have Dreams While You Sleep?

Have you listened to someone describe a complicated dream in extreme detail and wondered how in the world they could remember so many specifics? If you are someone who seemingly doesn’t dream when you’re asleep, you might be worried that there is something wrong with you. You probably do have dreams but just don’t remember them when you wake up.

Dreams and the Sleep Cycle

REM sleep, or rapid eye movement sleep, is when most dreams occur. During this stage, brain activity is extremely high—almost as high as when you are awake! This tends to result in the vivid mental imagery we associate with dreaming.

This sleep stage plays an important role in memory consolidation, cognitive processes, and emotional regulation. You could be getting quality REM sleep and just don’t recall your dreams–that’s OK! But if you never remember your dreams, it is possible you aren’t reaching the REM sleep cycle or getting enough of it.

What Impairs REM Sleep?

There are several factors that could be affecting your ability to get REM sleep, from taking certain medications to anxiety to an untreated sleep disorder. For example, sleep apnea can prevent your body from reaching the REM cycle. Obstructive sleep apnea, in particular, is a condition in which your airways become blocked while you sleep, causing your body to wake up throughout the night to restore breathing function. Due to this repeated interruption of your sleep, you may not be able to get far enough into the REM stage to experience dreams.
