Does Mouth Taping Promote Better Sleep?
March 17, 2023 8:00 amHave you recently seen mouth taping promoted as a revolutionary life hack that someone learned about when they were today years old? Always question “health” trends that come from someone on social media instead of your trusted team of healthcare professionals. Mouth taping is not such a simple solution for your sleep issues.
What Is Mouth Taping?
Mouth taping involves taping the lips together during sleep to keep them closed with the aim of forcing yourself to breathe through your nose. Proponents of this trend emphasize using porous tape that is skin-friendly and free of toxic materials to avoid irritation.
Some patients want to try mouth taping because they believe by breathing through their nose, they can avoid the negative effects of mouth breathing, such as snoring, bad breath, dry mouth, a sore throat, and disturbed sleep. However, this practice will not address the underlying reason for your mouth breathing.
Possible Reasons for Mouth Breathing
Factors that could be causing you to breathe through your mouth when you sleep include:
- Blocked nasal passages (allergies, congestion, deviated septum, etc.)
- Enlarged tonsils
- Poor sleep positioning
- Sleep apnea
